2018 Cooinda Update
We are well into our second season in our new northern location with joining wrapped up for 2018 and the countdown to lambing beginning. We have used three seasoned performers on hire from our parent stud 'Johnos' and one young ram bred right here at 'Cooinda' as part of our 2018 program. Details on the pedigree and performance of these rams can be found on our website. Johnos Aurora 83, Johnos 1119 and Johnos 606 have all had a lasting impact in the Johnos flock and will complement our ewe base well. The ram lamb used this year as part of our program is Cooinda Breakaway 20. This young ram stood out with the highest weaning weight of the mob, no mean feat when you are a twin lamb! With a larger ewe base for this years joining we are looking forward to the impact these sires will have on our flock.
We have attended a number of local shows this year and have been very pleased with how our team performed. The competition at all shows in the Border Leicester sections has been very strong and a credit to the breed. A highlight was our performance at the Dubbo Show where over 200 Border Leicesters were exhibited. We placed in every class entered even managing to come second in the open bare shorn young ram class out of a line up of 15 rams. This ram was also placed 3rd in the Objective Measurement class, he will be one to watch with outstanding growth and carcase measurements. The team came home with a few broad ribbons from both the Gilgandra and Wellington shows which was a real treat in our first year showing in the region.
Seasonal conditions have been tough here as they have been in many areas. The ewes have held up well in the challenging season with the ewe lamb carcase scanning results showing how well the girls have fared through recent months. This years sale rams have continued to mature well and we are looking forward to having them ready for inspections as we head into the sale season.
