2019 Stud Rams
Joining for the 2019 season is underway and we are really excited with our line up of stud rams being used. We focused on selecting rams with excellent growth, fertility and carcase traits along with being structurally well balanced. Here is some more detail on each of our studs:
Cooinda Breakaway 20 (17/20)
This is the second season we have used this extremely balanced and well muscled sire. He has outstanding muscling, eating quality and fertility ASBV's which are all in the top 5% or higher for maternal breeds. In addition to this, his BLX index is also in the top 5% for maternal sires giving an indication of how balanced his desirable traits are overall. Another strong trait to note for this sire is his high PFAT ASBV which is important when aiming to breed ewes with good 'doing ability' that are able to not only wean their lambs but maintain condition ready for the next joining. In our current climatic conditions it is invaluable to have ewes with the ability to do more with less especially when feed is in low supply and high expense.
Cooinda Breakaway 148 (17/148)
This ram was a stand out in our show team from last year being our highest placing ram at the Dubbo Show. He has a very similar pedigree from Breakaway 20 following on from the ever successful Johnos Aurora 83 family however he has a few key traits that make him a standout. He has outstanding early growth with his Post Weaning Weight ASBV in the top 10% for the breed whilst still maintaining the excellent fertility and eating quality's of his half brother. He is an incredibly powerful ram with a long and deep carcase with the presence and spirit to match.
Johnos 'Neil' (17/215)
We are lucky enough to have this big striking ram on loan from the Johnos stud as he will be an excellent compliment to our current ewe base. He has outstanding early growth and presence inherited from his father Retallack 'Earthquake' that has been used in the Johnos AI program. His scale, length and bone strength will be well suited to our northern environment where we hope he will have a lasting impact on our flock. Many people say they rarely see their Border Leicester rams actually 'at work' however this ram must be the exception to the rule as his is rarely seen at rest, he really loves his ladies.
Cooinda Lock 37 (18/37)
This solid ram was selected 'on paper' due to his traits closely aligning with the goals we have set for the stud. By some kind of miracle that does not often happen he was also:
a) alive and,
b) the most outstanding young ram in the mob
Stong, balanced and powerful this young ram has excellent early growth coupled with very high maternal traits that he will pass onto his progeny. For a young ram he was not shy and was seen working before he and his harem had even left the sheep yards en route to their love nest.
Cooinda Hooker 122 (17/122)
If you are looking for a stylish, balanced and structurally correct ram this is your guy. Another of our 2018 show team alumni he is our most attractive ram in the team with a lovely kind nature. Good looks don't make any money however so it is lucky he also pairs excellent early growth and fleece weight with his pleasing aesthetics.
In 5 short months we will see the results of this joining dropping on the ground. Hopefully by then we will also be seeing some rain dropping down too!
